6 Steps to Delete Stuck or Waiting Apps on Android

Have you ever tried to download an app on your Android phone, only to have it get stuck on “Waiting” or “Pending” indefinitely? This common Google Play Store issue can be incredibly frustrating. The good news is there are several ways to fix apps that won’t download and remove them from your queue. Follow these steps to get things moving again.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

Before troubleshooting further, make sure your device has a strong Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. A weak signal can cause apps to hang during download.

  • Open your device’s Settings and tap on Network & Internet or Connections
  • Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and you’re connected to the correct network
  • If using mobile data, ensure you have a strong cellular signal. You may need to move to a different area.

2. Cancel and Restart the Download

Often, you can get a stuck app to start downloading again by canceling and restarting the process:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Locate the app that is stuck on “Waiting” or “Pending”
  3. Tap the X on the right side of the progress bar to cancel the download
  4. Once it disappears from the queue, find the app in the Play Store again
  5. Tap the Download or Install button to restart the process

If the app gets stuck again, move on to the next steps.

3. Clear Google Play Store Data and Cache

Accumulated data and cache in the Play Store app can sometimes interfere with downloads. Clearing this out can get things back on track:

  1. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps & Notifications
  2. Find and tap on the Google Play Store in the app list
  3. Tap Storage > Clear Cache. Then tap Clear Data and confirm.
  4. Re-open the Play Store and retry downloading the app

Clearing data will remove your Play Store preferences, but should fix most app download issues.

4. Check for System and App Updates

Having an outdated version of Android or the Play Store app can also cause apps to get stuck. Check for any available updates:

  • Open Settings > System > System Update
  • If an update is available, tap Download and Install
  • Once updated, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, and select Settings
  • Scroll down and tap Play Store Version to check for any Play Store updates

Install any available updates, then try downloading your stuck app again.

5. Remove and Re-Add Your Google Account

An issue with your Google account data can cause the Play Store to misbehave. Try removing and re-adding the account:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts and tap on your Google account
  2. Tap Remove Account and confirm. Your phone will remove the account.
  3. Restart your Android device
  4. Go back to Settings > Accounts > Add Account > Google
  5. Sign in with your account credentials
  6. Open the Play Store and try downloading the app once more

6. Uninstall Play Store Updates

If the Play Store app itself has a bug, you may need to uninstall its updates and revert to the factory version:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Google Play Store
  2. Tap the three-dot menu and select Uninstall Updates
  3. The Play Store will now be reverted to its original version
  4. Open the Play Store and it should prompt you to update it again
  5. Once updated, try downloading your problem app again

Conclusion

Having an app stuck on “Waiting” or “Pending” is an annoying issue, but one that’s usually easy to resolve. Start by checking your internet connection and restarting the download. If that doesn’t work, clear the Play Store data and cache, check for system updates, remove and re-add your Google account, or uninstall Play Store updates. One of these steps should get your apps downloading and installing normally again.

Remember, you can always contact Google Play support if you continue to have issues with app downloads. Don’t let a stuck app stop you from enjoying your Android device
